Colombian Customer Purchases 104 Tons of Galvalume Steel Coils

A customer from Colombia purchased a batch of galvalume steel coils. The product features a DX51D base material and an AZ30 coating, with dimensions of 0.41 × 1220 mm, and both sides of the coils were treated with a fingerprint-resistant finish.

The total order volume was approximately 104 metric tons. In addition to the surface treatment and dimensional requirements of the product itself, the customer placed particular emphasis on the weight per coil, edge protection, and container loading weight. The final production plan needed to meet the total purchase volume while reasonably controlling the weight per coil to reduce the risk of the coil edges being crushed during transportation and loading/unloading.

Why does the customer require that the weight of each coil be kept under 4 metric tons?

This is because the customer’s lifting equipment has a maximum lifting capacity of 4 metric tons. Another reason is that the customer is concerned that if the coil weight is too heavy, the edges of the steel coils will be more susceptible to significant pressure during transportation, loading, unloading, or stacking, thereby increasing the risk of edge deformation and indentations.

Therefore, this order does not simply aim to maximize the weight of each coil, but rather to reasonably control the weight of the finished coils during the production and slitting processes.

Our Solutions

Coil Weight Control

  • Prior to production, the target weight of each coil is precisely calculated at 3.71 metric tons, ensuring that the coil diameter for the 0.41 mm × 1220 mm specification remains within a reasonable range.
  • Closed-loop tension control is employed during the winding process to ensure uniform tightness—preventing the inner layer from becoming loose or the outer layer from becoming too tight—and to avoid layer misalignment during transportation.
  • Each coil is weighed and labeled with its actual weight immediately upon completion, ensuring the total weight of 28 coils is close to 104 metric tons, while no single coil exceeds the 4-metric-ton limit.

Surface Protection

  • After the fingerprint-resistant coating has cured, online surface quality inspection is conducted to ensure the coating is uniform, with no missed areas or streaks.
  • The outer circumference of each coil is wrapped in rust-proof paper and PE protective film to prevent surface abrasion during lifting and transportation; protective plates are installed on both ends of the coil to shield the edges from impact.
  • When packing, appropriate spacing is maintained between coils, and they are secured with wooden battens to prevent surface dents caused by the coils rolling and colliding during ocean transport.
